Henry tells Markham he is sending the manuscript to Doubleday Page and Co. He is sending a copy to Edwin for his library. He needs advice on the poems he is placing in his volume. He is working on writing a another called "Chant Royal" on life. This will be a series of five. He names them. Refers to Senator Phelan. He is adding a lyric "Solace" to the collection.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
